James M. Scurlock

James Scurlock is a very accomplished and respected employment and civil rights attorney. He was recognized as one of Arkansas’ Top Lawyers by Arkansas Life magazine. In 2014 and 2015, Soirée Magazine recognized him as one of the top lawyers in Little Rock.

James practices Insurance Law, Contract Law, Employment Discrimination, Disability Discrimination, Health Law, Veteran and Military Discrimination, Federal Civil Rights Violations, State Civil Rights Violations, and Tort Law, with extensive experience in mediation, arbitration, agency hearings, and court proceedings.

James’ employment and civil rights practice includes extensive work in the following litigation areas: Fair Labor Standards Act, Family Medical Leave Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, The Rehabilitation Act, Pregnancy Protection Act, Age Discrimination in Employment Act, ERISA claims, Genetic Information Non-Discrimination Act, USERRA, Fair Credit Reporting Act, The Civil Rights Act, and HIPAA compliance. James represents both Plaintiffs and Defendants in these areas of law.

James lives in Austin, Texas, with his fiancé Ethan. He splits his time between Dallas and Austin but travels all over Texas for litigation. Before joining DebnamRust, James worked for one of the largest civil rights firms in the southern United States, representing clients in civil rights, , and discrimination cases. James has worked on cases in this area of law originally as a law clerk, then an Arkansas Rule XV Attorney, then as a Federal Rule 46(b) Attorney in the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, and finally as a licensed attorney in his own right. He continues to focus on these areas of practice at DebnamRust with Defense and Plaintiff clients.

James was born in Jacksonville, Texas, and grew up north of Nacogdoches. Before practicing law, James spent 13 years as lead negotiator of contracts and services in excess of $ 250 million with several telecom and technology companies in Texas and Arkansas.
